The highly anticipated Marvel movie, “Captain America: The First Avenger,” has dominated the box office in its opening weekend. The “Captain” received about $65.8 million domestically, but internationally, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is still ahead with $121.3 million gross in its second weekend.
Knowing that “Harry Potter” would dominate in its opening weekend, Paramount decided it would be best to wait a week to show “Captain America.” Even with the competition, domestically, “Captain America” has had the third-best Marvel movie launch, with 40% of the weekend gross from 3D. “Captain America” also faired better than its fellow Avenger movie, “Thor,” released earlier this summer.
While critics are not exactly thrilled with the 3D aspects of the film, they note that the creators were more interesting in introducing the character of Captain America than 3D thrills. However, “Captain America” managed to receive a score of A- from CinemaScore and capture the weekend box office.
